Modern food advertising sells not taste, but emotions and impressions. And there are many ways to achieve this.

Imagine you make cornflakes. Crunchy, tasty, excellent ingredients. You’ve done tons of research and proved that these are truly the best flakes. But how do you tell the audience about it? How do you convey this taste in an ad? Well, you can’t.

The thing is, modern food advertising sells not taste, but emotions and impressions. And for that, you can use different techniques, which we are going to discuss.

For the Nature’s Own bread commercial, the creators built an entire atmospheric fairy tale, with everything turning out perfectly. This way, they communicated to young consumers and their parents that Nature’s Own bread is really “kind,” meaning it doesn’t contain harmful components.

Tropicana+ used a simple and effective way to show the healthy components in their juice. The protagonist is literally overwhelmed with vitamins, creating a sense of abundance and energy for the viewer. Dynamic music spices up the ad with a good mood.

And here’s the cornflakes ad. The creators of Purely Elizabeth worked with morning rituals, which many people believe can eventually lead to enlightenment. But the creatives remind us: there’s Purely Elizabeth breakfast, which gives you energy right now.

In Pillsbury’s ad, the brand mascot is brilliantly integrated, evoking emotions. It’s something caring, cute, fun, and soft—just like the Pillsbury rolls themselves.

Here’s an example of how to creatively shoot an ad with a famous actor. Instead of just showing a happy Jeremy Renner in the kitchen, the creators of the Silk ad made native references to his character in Marvel movies. Definitely a hit with fans of the franchise.

The Stouffer’s Mac and Cheese ad tells us: “These mac and cheese are so good, you won’t want to get distracted.” The creators used a clever wordplay: busy - cheesy - creamy. It sounds great and is easy to remember.

How to sell snack packs? Show what a party would be like with them! And for better effect, the creators added unposed, imperfect photos that perfectly convey the atmosphere of a friendly gathering.

This Heinz commercial can easily be mistaken for a Disney cartoon, which is a trigger for an entire generation. But besides the recognizable animation, the creators added a message about growing up, which resonates with modern millennials.

Here’s another example of animation in advertising. It looks stylish, fresh, and unconventional, just like the evian x Coperni collaboration.

Word “break” has multiple meanings, two of which KitKat cleverly played with in their ad. On one hand, it’s about taking a break, and on the other, it’s about the breaking and characteristic crunch of KitKat. This wordplay combined with the storyline creates the insight that chocolate helps you get rid of the burden of tasks.

Not just an ad, but a whole drama that unfolds around “fake ice cream.” An interesting move. We’re used to seeing fake luxury brands, but this time it’s about the original Magnum ice cream. Excellent shooting, a clear storyline, great acting—essentially, cinema.

Here, Barilla creatively played with pasta, turning an ordinary dinner into a work of art. The viewer immediately gets the sense that Barilla is something exquisite.
